Is that possible, or does it have to be done from the server?
If your branch is off of master, you are welcome to update it to the latest content from master. The branch in question will have the same content as master, and your development work will be mirrored with the master branch.
From what I gather, Git does not allow for you to update something you don't have access to.
That is possible but you need to be logged into the server which hosts the Git repository, usually using SSH.
To update the branch on the server, assuming you are connected via SSH, you would use the git branch command, e.g.:
git branch new-branch-name
Then the server will mirror your new-branch-name branch to the directory on the server. It will also mirror any new files you add to the branch. If you just have a git pull from the server that won't happen.
